Mismatched Artists Present “Collusion” at Mount Marty College’s Bede Art Gallery in October

September 24, 2018

YANKTON, SD - Collusion describes cooperation on a secret plot, but there are no secrets here; the Bede Art Gallery on the campus of Mount Marty College (MMC) is excited to announce that “Collusion” — the outcome of a creative partnership between graphic designer Young Ae Kim and fine artist Cory Knedler — will be on display in the gallery beginning Monday, October 1, 2018.

Young Ae Kim is a graphic designer, associate professor and graphic design program coordinator at South Dakota State University. She has been practicing design for over 18 years. Her major clients include Samsung, LG, Hyundai, Nike, Belvita, Citibank and more. She has won several design awards and scholarships nationally and internationally.

Cory Knedler is Chair of the Department of Art at the University of South Dakota.  He received his BFA from Fort Hays State University and his MFA from the University of South Dakota. As a printmaker, his works have been exhibited in over 100 shows, including exhibits at the Mid-America Print Conference, Southern Graphics Print Conference and the Brussels National Museum in Belgium.

Though the pair seems to be mismatched, Kim and Knedler worked collaboratively on these artworks, and their differences inspired something that, alone, they could not have discovered or created. The works were created by both artists taking turns adding their own images, opinions and design elements to each work.

This excerpt from their artist's statement illustrates the spirit of play that ensued as they responded to the other’s marks and thoughts, “While collusion has taken on a negative tone in the media, we have taken ownership of the work as a positive. Let us be very clear; we did collude on these works of art.”

The “Collusion” exhibit, which is free and open to the public, will be available for viewing at Bede Art Gallery Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. starting October 1, 2018. The show will conclude with a reception and gallery talk on October 31 from 2 to 4 p.m.
