Mount Marty College Reports Exceptional Growth in Freshman and Transfer Students

September 12, 2018

YANKTON, SD — During a time of enrollment-struggles among higher education institutions nationwide, Mount Marty College (MMC) is enjoying a surge in new students. The college welcomed 169 new undergraduate students for the 2018-2019 academic year; an increase of 16.55% over 2017-2018. MMC reports the largest group of new freshman students the college has enrolled since 2004.

According to MMC’s Dean of Enrollment, Stephanie Moser, the increase is the result of an uptick in the number of both first-time and transfer students, “We were very excited to welcome 121 new freshmen to campus this August,” says Moser. “That number represents a 16.35% increase over last year’s freshman enrollment numbers, and we’re are also up 17.50% in transfer students over last fall.”

Much of the growth is regional. Enrollment of students from South Dakota is up 15.78%, and Nebraska recruitment increased 26.66% over last year; but the increase isn’t limited to the surrounding area. MMC’s newest students hail from 23 different states and 11 countries, including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Mexico, Republic of Georgia, Serbia, Spain, United Kingdom, and Venezuela.

Registration in MMC’s graduate programs also grew 5.8% over the last year. Enrollment at MMC’s Watertown campus declined by four students. Mount Marty’s total enrollment for the fall of 2018 is 781 students compared to 755 students during the fall of 2017.

Mount Marty College President Dr. Marcus Long says the increase was a result of a lot of hard work by many people. “We are very excited about the impressive growth Mount Marty has enjoyed over the last year,” says Dr. Long. “This increase is, in large part, due to the dedication and leadership of our faculty members and coaches, and their coordination with the admissions and financial aid staff, but the efforts of the entire college should be noted. Everyone on campus has worked together to show more students the benefit of a Mount Marty education.  I am thankful for their continued efforts. I am happy to welcome so many new students to our community, and I am very excited about the future.”
